GGSCT History

In September 1922, a group of paint production men of the San Francisco Bay Area felt a definite need for an organization of production men to help solve mutual problems and to benefit by the fellowship offered from such an organization.  They met in an organizational meeting on September 18th, 1922, and elected officers.  Those present at the organizational meeting and who were charter members of the Bay Cities Paint Superintendents' Club were as follows:

  • Fleming, C.S. - The Paraffine Companies

  • Gregory, H.A. - National Lead Company

  • Holt, W.W. - R.N. Nason Company

  • Hoover, Chas. - Friedman Paint Company

  • Hulton, Chas. - California Paint Company

  • Levy, Fred - W.P. Fuller & Sons

  • Nagel, G.N. - Bass-Huerter Paint Company

  • Nutz, Wm. - G.M. Coldberg

  • Tibbets - Company Unknown

  • Wharton, R.L. - Certain-teed Products

The first paint and varnish production clubs were originated in the East and Midwest during 1914 and 1915.  In June of 1922, nine such clubs banded together to form the Federation of Paint and Varnish Production Clubs.  In 1923, the Bay Cities Paint Superintendents' Club changed its name to California Paint Superintendents' Club and joined the Federation of Paint and Varnish Production Clubs in 1923.  In 1932, the name was changed to the Golden Gate Paint and Varnish Production Club.  In 1960, the name was changed again to the Golden Gate Society for Coatings Technology.

Past Meeting Locations

At the 2017 GGSCT Christmas Lunch we reminisced and compiled this list of all the places the GGSCT has ever had a meeting.  How many can you remember?

This list is unverified except by the memories of those who compiled it.  Some may be places where the old Association met, some may have had nothing to do with a paint meeting.  Many places have closed, some have burned to the ground.  Aging and decades of inhaling high VOC materials may have clouded our memories.
